SCG Atlanta

The Standard metagame can be quite fickle. With such a small card pool, if any relevant cards are added or removed change is imminent. So between the release of Amonkhet, the ban announcement, and the addendum to the ban announcement, saying Team MGG had some work to do for SCG Atlanta would be an understatement.

Having had the most experience by a notable amount in the last Standard format, I spearheaded the team’s testing process this time around. Before the addendum to the ban list, I was locked in on Four-Color Saheeli and had conveyed the merits of the deck to my teammates to the extent that they were tentative locks to play the deck as well. When the banned list revision blew that plan up, we were left with just a single day to test. That Thursday was spent throwing decks against the wall until something stuck, with the backup plan of just playing Mardu Vehicles.

Nothing really stuck.

Dan was content with how the Temur Marvel deck I was messing around with performed, but Brad, Jim, and myself resigned ourselves to Marduing people. I spent Thursday night theorycrafting a vehicles list then played a few games against Brad and called it a night.

Friday we had an excellent time at our Challenge a Guru event at Win Condition Games just north of Atlanta, and we were able to get a few more games in with the Mardu deck. Brad, Jim and I spent some time discussing the list and settled on our 75 for the open.

Day One of the event went well, and every member of the team would still be competing the following day. Things went particularly well for me as I put up my second consecutive unblemished Day One record at 8-0-1. We capped off the day with some Korean BBQ for an interesting and enjoyable dining experience.

Day Two followed a similar pattern. The team performed well with Brad finishing 10th, Jim 33rd, and Dan 62nd. But unlike I had so many times before, I kept my stellar start rolling and was able to take down an Open. This tournament was my eighth Open top 8 and 5th finals appearance, but my first win.

This event was certainly special for me, and I can’t thank the team enough because I couldn’t have done it without them. But as always, it’s time to start getting ready for the next one. Next week Ben, Brad, Frank, Jim, and myself head to GP Richmond. Booster draft has always been a bit of an achilles heel for me, but all this momentum I have might just be enough to overcome it.
